FIFA postponed decision on Palestine’s request to suspend Israel

FIFA has postponed its decision on Palestine’s request to suspend Israel from International Football until after the Olympics in Paris. FIFA stated both sides had asked for extra time to present their arguments.

Hence, it did not make a decision now on Palestine’s proposal to expel Israel. This move came in response to the Palestine Football Association’s (PFA) demand to suspend Israel due to the Gaza conflict.

PFA made this demand in May 2024. FIFA ordered an immediate legal assessment. It also stated it would discuss this matter at an emergency council meeting in July 2024.

Following this, FIFA announced that it would share the legal assessment with the emergency council meeting on August 31, 2024. The football governing body FIFA stated that conflicting parties including Israel and Palestine have requested an extension to submit their respective positions.

Hence, FIFA needs more time to conclude this process with due care and completeness. So, FIFA postponed a decision on Palestine’s request to suspend Israel till August 31.

The men’s football competition will begin group play on July 24 and run until August 11 at the Paris Olympics. Israel has already qualified for the men’s football competition and will face Japan, Mali, and Paraguay in the group stage.

Meanwhile, lawyers who specialize in international law presented a report this week on the ongoing Gaza humanitarian crisis at the hands of Israel. It also demanded FIFA to ban Israel for breaking multiple FIFA regulations about humanitarian and human rights goals.

It is significant to note that the people of Palestine have been suffering from a deep humanitarian crisis since October 7, 2023. According to Gaza health officials, 38,000 Palestinians have died due to the deadliest Israeli attacks and strikes.

The great number of dead Palestinians include children and women. More than 13,800 children fell victim to Israeli military operations. Rough estimates suggest that over 2% of Gaza’s children population have either died or were injured.
