Darwin Nunez may face long-term ban after violent clash with fans
Uruguayan footballer Darwin Nunez may face a long-term ban after he got into a violent clash with fans after the 2024 Copa America semifinals. This unpleasant event unfolded after Uruguay lost to Colombia by 1-0 in the semifinals.
Darwin was one of the Uruguay players who went among the crowd after the game ended in Charlotte, North Carolina. He appeared to get into a fight with Colombian fans wearing yellow shirts.
However, a fight broke out behind Uruguay’s bench between a group of fans and the rest of the crowd, who were Columbian fans. They threw drinks at each other.
Afterward, a new shocking video appeared while spotting star player Darwin, who entered the crowd and went on to punch Columbian fans. Other Uruguay teammates, including Jose Gimenez and Ronald Araujo, also followed footsteps of Darwin.
They voluntarily fought with fans of their rival team. Meanwhile, Rodrigo Betancur was seen throwing bottles into the crowd. One of those bottles hit back a Uruguayan staff member.
Uruguayan players Maximiliano Araujo and Sebastian Caceres were also among those players who clashed with fans. After this clash, Jose claimed that Columbian fans were drunken and rushed towards their families.
According to Jose, their families were sitting close to drunken fans. Hence, they approached the crowd to protect their families. It is embarrassing there was no one police officer to protect families. It forced them to intervene as drunken fans went out of control.
Darwin also appeared to console her baby daughter on the field after the clash ended upon the interference from the police. However, Darwin Nunez and other involved Uruguayan players may face a long-term ban for misconduct.
Following this incident, the governing body of football in South America, CONMEBOL, strongly condemned it. It discouraged any act of violence that affected football.
According to CONMEBOL, their approach is founded on the belief that the positive values of football bring people together and connect them. Hence, prejudice and violence have no place on or off the field.
Hence, they must remind everyone to give their all in supporting their teams and throwing a memorable party on the days that remain. They have also reached Darwin Nunez’s management organization for their response.
