Canadian 1st baseman Joey Votto retired after 17 years at 40

Canadian 1st baseman for Cincinnati Reds, Joey Votto retired from international baseball after 17 years at 40. He announced his retirement on his Instagram account.

Joey served in Major League Baseball career for more than a decade. He was a six-time All-Star and former National League MVP (Most Valuable Player Award).

Canadian expressed gratitude and satisfaction with his experience throughout his career. He stated he was himself in this sport. He played with every last ounce of his body, heart, and mind.

His retirement announcement came after he failed to regain from hitting just 1.65 with a 0.569 on-base-plus-slugging percentage across 31 games in three different minor league levels this season.

Joey had been working towards a comeback through the Toronto Blue Jay’s minor league system. He praised his efforts in his emotional statement. He said he is just not good anymore.

Joey expressed his disappointment at being unable to perform in front of his Toronto-based supporters. He said he tried his hardest but was unsuccessful.

Joey signed a minor league deal with Toronto earlier this year after ending a 12-year $251.5 million contract with Cincinnati Reds.

He played 2,065 games in his Cincinnati career hitting 0.294 with 356 home runs, 1,144 RBIs, and 0.920 OPS. RBIs refer to “runs batted in” and “on-base plus slugging.”

Joey was selected in the second round in the 2002 draft and made his big league debut in 2007. He became the 2010 National League MVP and led the Cincinnati Reds’ two NL Central championships.

He also won his lone Gold Glove Award in 2010. Hence, Canadian Joey Votto became 1st baseman to spend his 17th-year career with Cincinnati and retired now.

Joey also expressed his deep love for Cincinnati in his retirement post and wrote he has only played for it. He loves it. He also thanked his family, fans, colleagues, and coaches.
