Scientists created superflies to eat human poop & clean streets
Australian scientists created genetically engineered superflies to eat human poop as a solution to the global trash problem by removing human waste from land. Human poop, a form of organic waste is increasing which keeps the environment polluted.
Hence, this scientific development is a breakthrough in maintaining cleanliness in the surrounding environment. The developed superflies are black soldier flies, modified insects that can consume a variety of organic waste, including leftover food and industrial leftovers.
According to a recent study, these flies can also produce valuable materials including high-quality animal feed, lubricating oils, and biofuels.
It also reduces the amount of organic waste in landfills to massively lower methane emissions. Methane is a hazardous greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
This research can significantly change the standard method of waste management and lead to a much more sustainable future. The study’s author stated that a significant worldwide concern is organic waste management.
Around 40-70% of organic waste is dumped in landfills at the moment where it is compressed firmly to preserve space. This causes the breakdown of organic waste by anaerobic microbiological processes. It produces methane, a greenhouse gas (GHG) 28 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.
As a result, the solid waste sector is likely responsible for about 5% of the world’s yearly CO2 -equivalent emissions. Most of this is due to the methane released when organic waste dumps in landfills.

Dr. Kate Tepper is the lead author of this research study. She stated superflies will be the next frontier for artificial biology applications. They will help them solve some of the biggest waste management problems they have not been able to solve with microbes.
Scientists at Macquarie University in Australia created superflies to eat human poop and remove massive organic waste to maintain cleanliness in the environment.
Black soldier flies are already useful in waste management when they eat commercial organic waste. Later, they become pet food and are sold to commercial fish and poultry producers.
However, Macquarie scientists think that genetic engineering of these black soldier flies could increase their utilization. It may allow them to transform waste into improved animal meals or priceless industrial raw materials.
