Odysseus achieved historic US landing in 50 years after 1972
Odysseus has achieved the first US historic landing on the moon in more than 50 years, known as a “cargo mission.” This is the first successful landing of a commercial spacecraft on the moon, following a successful US lunar lander mission last month.
The NASA cargo ship Odysseus is the first US-launched ship to land on the moon’s surface since Apollo 17 in 1972. Odysseus, also known as “Odie.” It is a type of lunar lander designed by Intuitive Machines, a commercial lunar missions firm. It delivers a modest payload at the surface of the moon.
NASA paid Intitutive Machines $118 million for the cargo mission. It will also examine the environment at one of the moon poles as part of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.
EVONA, a space industry recruiter, defines a payload as a spaceship component dedicated to completing mission objectives. They may include scientific instruments, communication equipment, or other specialized equipment required for the cargo mission.
This model of lunar lander is known as Nova-C. According to Intuitive Machines, it is approximately the size of a British telephone booth with attached legs. According to NASA, it is a hexagonal cylinder measuring 4.0 meters tall and 1.57 meters wide.

The lander carries five NASA payloads and one commercial payload that weighs 100kg. NASA’s cargo includes exploration and other equipment. However, NASA payloads will focus on demonstrating communication, navigation, precision, and landing technologies. It will also gather scientific data about the moon’s surface interactions.
Joel Kearns is the deputy assistant administrator for exploration in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. According to Joel, NASA pays company to take their equipment to the surface of the Moon to collect data.
Odysseus achieved a historic US landing as NASA launched it to support the aim to send astronauts back to the Moon and then build a permanent base there.
