New Snake Species with Eyelashes discovered in Thailand
Scientists have discovered a new poisonous and colorful Snake Species with “Eyelashes” in Thailand. They found this interesting species among limestone rocks in the forests of Trang province, Thailand.
These species are called Trimeresurus Ciliaris which emerged near the border between Thailand and Malaysia. When scientists found one snake with eyelashes, they searched for other snakes that looked similar to it.
They remained successful in finding four more snakes close to the larger limestone boulder covered in dense vegetation. The research team concluded they had found new snake species after closely inspecting and thoroughly examining the snakes, particularly their distinguishing “eyelashes” feature.
Scientists described newly found species as pitviper which means poisonous. They are relatively small comprising only about 17 inches in size. These species have emerald green bodies of jewel-like snakes with dark red crossbands.
Its eyes are olive green and have a triangular head. Nikolay Poyarkov is a co-author of this research study. He remarked that they found a new species “Trimeresurus Ciliaris” with beautiful coloration.
According to Nikolay, the snake’s unique coloring feature helps them hide on the surfaces of limestone rocks covered in mosses, lichens, and so on. He also revealed that new snake species are poisonous. However, the nature of their poison is unknown.

The particular color contrasts of the snake appeared highly similar to limestones. It made it difficult for them to find snakes residing on those limestones.
However, scientists gave the name “ciliaris” to this snake species as it is derived from a Latin adjective and means “an eyelash.” The snakes have characteristic small eye scales which resemble eyelashes.
Normally these snakes have a large scale above the eye which looks like an eyebrow and gives these snakes a frightening look. The journal Vertebrate Zoology has published this research study.
