Baltimore City sued Coke and Pepsi over pollution concerns
Baltimore City sued Coke, Pepsi, and several other plastic manufacturing corporations while citing their pollution concerns. Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland state, United States.
They filed a lawsuit against these corporations, claiming they should pay to clean up plastic waste on city streets and waterways. The accused companies use plastic to wrap chips, snacks, and beverages. Hence, they are massively contributing to plastic pollution throughout the city.
Baltimore City also sued several Maryland-based plastics manufacturers, including W.R. Grace & Co. and Mercury Plastics MD. Others include Adell Plastics Inc. and Polymershapes Baltimore.
The Baltimore city’s legal representative, Ebony Thompson, filed this lawsuit in Baltimore City Circuit Court. According to a statement from Ebony, this lawsuit is a part of a larger initiative by the city’s “Affirmative Litigation Division” to sue companies that Baltimore City considers are harming the environment and people.
Ebony stated they filed a lawsuit against those responsible for PCB and PFAS chemical contamination and cigarette filter pollution. PCB refers to polychlorinated biphenyls (toxic chemicals), while PFAS refers to per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (hazardous substances).
Hence, they filed financial compensation of $8 million for polluting the city environment. Ebony also claimed to bring more legal action against harmful companies that put profits before people. They aim to address the damage caused by these companies.
Coke, Pepsi, and Frito-Lay, Adell Plastics are some of the significant international companies that Baltimore City sued in its lawsuit. However, the president of Adell Plastics, Michael Dellheim, expressed shock at finding out that Baltimore City included his company name in its lawsuit.
Michael stated he understood so far from this lawsuit that Baltimore City wants to suppress the growth of microplastics in their food and water supplies by going after single-use plastics-producing companies. He emphasized that these issues have nothing to do with Adell Plastic’s products.
