American multinational company Amazon’s redesigned Alexa app with more customization options makes smart home controls easier to use.

Amazon has finally updated its Alexa app after a long period of 3 years. This week marks the complete launch of the redesign Alexa for iOS and Android smartphones.

A newly designed app that is more simplified and specifically designed for controlling smart homes is the end product. Furthermore, even if it’s not noticeably faster, it’s far more user-friendly and intuitive.

Amazon’s director of smart home, Charlie French gave an interview to The Verge. He said the main goal of Alexa’s redesign is putting smart home controls front and center. The use of smart homes has increased. We currently have millions of users who are linked to more than 20 devices. So goal is to make it as simple as possible for people to access their gadgets.

What are the major updates in Alexa?

Some of the major updates in Alexa include its Home tab. The Home tab is now clearly organized unlike the haphazardly displayed “most relevant” and “recently used” elements. Additionally, it is adaptable, allowing you to choose what you want to use and view rather than what Alexa believes you should see.

The Devices screen is the other major update. Alexa has evolved from being a quick control page to more of a settings page, with the Home tab now primarily focused on smart home controls. According to Charlie, this is where you go to perform more sophisticated tasks.

The new Map View feature on the Devices screen offers an alternative to the list view. This appears to be the replacement for the Groups function in the home control app. To get to this, simply tap the map icon located in the upper right corner. You can now easily interact with gadgets on your home’s floor plan from this location.

However, Map View is now limited to iOS devices and under closed preview. To set it up, you’ll also need an iPhone 12 Pro or Max or later, or a fourth-generation iPad Pro or later. At launch, it will be available on the Echo Hub.

Overall, the Alexa improvements seem like advanced upgrades. Amazon has to put more effort into making Alexa a better smart home assistant, as this is the field where it can be most helpful.
