PIA flight with 54 passengers vanished 35 years ago & still missing
PIA flight PK-404 with 54 passengers vanished 35 years ago from Gilgit and is still missing today. This bizarre and incomprehensible incident happened on August 25, 1989, when it was a sunny day and flight PK-404 landed on Gilgit airport’s short runway.
The affected plane Fokker-F27 Friendship stopped at the airport terminal. After the passengers stepped off the plane, the crew started getting ready to return to Islamabad.
The airplane carrying 49 passengers and 5 crew members took off at 7:35 a.m. Four family members were among the passengers. However, the aircraft disappeared from sight shortly after takeoff and nobody knew where it went missing and it still remains a mystery.
Some speculate PIA flight PK-404 with 54 passengers vanished as the Indian army may have shot it down close to the Line of Control (LOC). However, there is no evidence exist for this.
Hence, the mysterious disappearance of the PK-404 flight still remains an unsolved puzzle how did it vanish, and where did it go after disappearance?
One of the pilots made a regular radio call around 7:40 a.m. It was the last known communication the aircraft made before its disappearance. Although debris has not yet been found, it is believed that the airplane crashed in the Himalayas.
After the catastrophe, the military conducted extensively but it turned out fruitless search and rescue operations in snow-capped highlands for several days. They found nothing out of the believed aircraft crash.
They also did not find any other evidence regarding flight disappearance in other parts of Pakistan despite more than 3 decades. It seemed like this flight never existed.
Arif Hussain, a relative of the passengers had switched their flight. Arif reportedly lost his uncle, aunt, wife, and two children in this incident. He stated it is a tragedy, they cannot forget. Who knew they would meet the same fate or even this one?
He said with a sad heart they have accepted they are no more. However, this date August 25, 1989, revives their wounds every year.
