Oman Shia mosque attack killed at least 4 Pakistanis and 30 injured

A shooting attack on the Shia mosque “Ali bin Abi Talib” in Muscat, the capital of Oman, killed at least 4 Pakistanis and 30 injured. This is an uncommon act in the normally peaceful Gulf kingdom.

The majority-Muslim population of Oman is either Sunni or Ibadi Islam. Ibadi Islam is an independent Islamic sect, which is neither Shia nor Sunni. Hence, the minority of Omanis is Shia.

Ashura is a month of sorrow that Shia Muslims specifically observe in the world. It honors the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, which took several lives, including Imam Hussain. He is the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), who received martyrdom with his other family members.

According to media reports, the Royal Oman Police have responded to a shooting incident that occurred in the vicinity of a mosque in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area.

There were four casualties and several injuries. According to the Foreign Office of Pakistan, four Pakistanis died as a result of gunshots in a terrorist attack on a Shia mosque.

Moreover, thirty Pakistanis have received critical injuries and are receiving treatment in hospitals. Oman police have killed attackers. The Foreign Office will provide more details as Oman authorities update it.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has condemned this terrorist attack. He expressed sadness at the death of people, including four Pakistanis.

He also ordered the Pakistani Embassy in Muscat to provide all possible assistance to the injured Pakistanis by visiting them personally in the hospital.

The ambassador of Pakistan in Oman, Imran Ali visited a few hospitalized patients. He urged Pakistani residents to cooperate with Oman authorities and avoid territory around the victim mosque.

Imran stated they are in contact with Omani authorities and the hospital. Their officers are on alert for emergency blood donations to victims.

Pakistan Embassy in Oman has identified the dead victims as Mr Ghulam Abbas, Mr Hasan Abbas, Sayyed Qaisar Abbas, and Mr Sulaiman Nawaz.

However, no one has yet claimed responsibility for the Oman Shia mosque attack. Following this attack, the US embassy issued a security warning in Muscat and canceled all visa appointments.
