Imran Khan wrote letter to IMF to not give loan tranche to Pakistan
A jailed former prime minister, Imran Khan, wrote a letter to the IMF (International Monetary Fund) to stop issuing a loan tranche to Pakistan. He demanded the IMF suspend its assistance to financially struggling Pakistan until it investigates election transparency.
The general elections in Pakistan have been allegedly dodged by problems such as vote tampering. In this regard, Imran Khan wrote a letter to the IMF. Barrister Ali Zafar received a letter from Khan, who visited him at the Adiala Jail Rawalpindi.
Ali would dent this letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to Imran Khan requesting it conduct an election inquiry before deciding on any loan to Pakistan. Ali Zafar said any loan to Pakistan without analysis of votes would be detrimental to the financial situation of Pakistan.
Imran Khan has also nominated Ali Zafar to run in an Intra-party election for chairmanship. He also stated that the IMF has provisions prohibiting help to nationals with non-democratic administrations.
Imran said only fair and free elections could result in a democratic government. He denied claims that the letter would jeopardize the weak economy of Pakistan.
However, Pakistan has significantly relied on the IMF and is implementing a short-term USD 3 billion agreement. IMF has already issued two tranches of loans. The final tranche of USD 1.2 is expected by the end of March or Early April 2024.
Experts believe the new government will need to restart talks with the IMF to obtain a new loan after assuming the charge. On the other hand, Imran Khan’s decision to write a letter to the IMF sparked criticism from his opponents. According to them, Mr. Khan is on the verge of harming Pakistan.
Meanwhile, PML-N member Atta Tarar backlashed Imran Khan about submitting a letter to the IMF. He claims Imran is attempting to destroy the country.
