Ukrainian Defense Minister Resigns After Zelenskyy’s Appointment
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov resigns after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s appointment of Umerov. He was appointed in November 2021. Zelenskyy decided to replace him with Rustem Umerov. This change came because of a problem with the defense ministry buying military jackets and issues about corruption during the ongoing war.
A political analyst, Volodymyr Fesenko said about Reznikov that he was a good and prominent international negotiator. But chaos and disorder lie within the Ministry of Defense. Many deputies have taken advantage of it which resulted in corruption scandals during the war.
Zelenskyy made the announcement of a new defense minister on his telegram account. He said they needed new leadership because Reznikov had been in charge for over 550 days during a big war. Experts say that Ukraine is mostly focusing on the war, and there are not many resources, so they’re changing who’s in charge.
The Ukrainian President has also entirely focused on the war and considers Rustem as the better defense minister. Rustem Umerov, who is a lawmaker and was in charge of Ukraine’s State Property Fund, will now be the defense minister.
This change won’t really affect anything, where the fighting is but it could help Ukraine talk to other countries better and make sure they keep getting the weapons they need as they keep fighting in the cold weather.
