Afghan residents were already sleeping in tents outside their homes due to fear of the last deadly quake. A local resident named Nadar told The New York Times that when his body started shaking, he realized that it was another quake while he was sleeping in his yard. He heard shouting and screaming of people who were sleeping outside.
A team of The New York Times journalists was inside the Arg Hotel at the time of the earthquake. They felt the extreme shaking of walls and hotel buildings. When the shaking stopped, they saw broken pieces of concrete walls and pieces of ceiling in some rooms crash to the floor.
Afghanistan is facing continuously a series of massive earthquakes because of its geographical location in the Hindu Kush mountain ranges. This area lies near the junction of Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. These tectonic plates are responsible for earthquakes in Afghanistan.
