Why Boycott Netflix is Trending amid IC 814 series controversy
This article explains why the hashtag “Boycott Netflix” is trending amid Anubhav Sinha’s new Netflix series “IC814: The Kandakar Hijack.” This newly released Netflix series has become controversial now in India.
This series was released on August 29, 2024, showing the real event 1999 Kandahar Hijack. Big Bollywood stars including Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapoor have played roles in this series.
Apart from them, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Arvind Swamy also portrayed roles in the IC814. In case you are wondering, the reason behind the boycott demand is the alleged director’s terrorism coverup in the series.
They accused director Anubhav Sinha of covering up terrorism and legitimizing the crime goals of terrorists when they took over an Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in December 1999.
Most Indians on the internet are angry that Anubhav used non-Muslim names for Pakistani hijackers in his series. They called it was “Hinduphobic.” Some netizens even called Anubhav a “member of the Tukde Tukde Gang.”
Tukde Tukde Gang refers to a particular group that incites the nation and creates division among the Indian public to break the country.
Meanwhile, BJP IT cell chief, Amit Malviya also criticized director Anubhav Sinha for not mentioning the Muslim names of hijackers involved in the 1999 Kandahar Hijacking event.

This controversy started after Anubhav mentioned the hijacker’s names as Bhola, Shankar, Burger, Chief, and Doctor. However, their original names were Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim, and Shakir respectively.
That is why Boycott Netflix is trending in India as Indians especially Hindus allege Anubhav of supporting criminal Islamic terrorists by hiding their names in series. Some of them even announced him “sympathizer of terrorists.”
However, the controversial series portrays the historical event of the IC-814 flight hijacking on its way to Delhi in 1999. It carried 184 passengers whose lives were at stake at that time. This event reportedly led to the death of newlywed couple Rupin Katyal.
