Lahore police arrested 1330 kite flyers & makers during crackdown

Lahore police have raided kite flyers and makers throughout the city and arrested 1330 people during its widespread crackdown. According to Lahore police officials, the arrests included 1,223 kite flyers, 95 kite merchants and 12 makers.

Police seized 19,700 kites, and 1,116 string rolls used to fly kites during its crackdown operation throughout Lahore city. Bilal Siddique Kamyana, a police officer, declared that the bloody game of kite flying would not be allowed under any circumstances.

Bilal emphasized that people involved in the kite business faced severe consequences under the Kite Flying Act. Hence, the police of Lahore have registered 1,285 cases against those involved in bloody game kite flying and arrested 1330 kite flyers and makers.

The arrests happened in several regions including 308 in City Division, 296 in Cantonment, and 108 in Civil Lines. The other areas included 214 in Saddar, 157 in Iqbal Town, and 247 in Model Town.

This move of the Lahore police follows a tragic incident involving the death of a young motorcyclist in Faisalabad due to kite twine on March 23, 2024. The deceased motorcyclist was 22-year-old Asif Ashfaq.

He was on a motorcycle while crossing Faislabad’s Novelty bridge when kite twine struck him and he died instantly at the moment. Dr. Usman Anwar, Inspector General of Punjab (IGP), and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took notice of this incident.

CM Maryam ordered the district administration and police to arrest violators. She gave them a 48-hour deadline to arrest the culprits. Meanwhile, the IG has demanded a thorough report from the regional police office of Faisalabad (RPO). He also ordered the chief police officer to implement the anti-kite flying law strictly.

In a recent development, police have arrested prime suspect Abid along with his allies involved in Asif’s death. The police also recovered burnt material from kite-flying from suspects.
