Police filed FIR against PTI candidates after Rawalpindi protest
The police have filed an FIR against 62 independent candidates backed by PTI, including Seemabia Tahir and Ajmal Sabir, due to a protest in Rawalpindi. They held protests on Feb 11, 2024, for the alleged rigged results of the general elections 2024.
The Rawalpindi party leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are facing legal problems because of yesterday’s protest. Hence, the Rawalpindi police have filed an FIR against PTI-backed candidates in the wake of the protest.
After the protest outside the office of district election commissioners, the Rawalpindi cops took legal action against the PTI leadership and activists. They filed a case under Section 144. It includes charges of official interference, blocking roads, and other public disorder offenses.
Sub-Inspector Abdul Ghaffor named 62 people as suspects in the case at the Sadoqabad Police Station. Law enforcement acted quickly because they considered a protest against Section 144. This section forbids public gatherings and rallies.
According to law enforcement officials, they intervened because a protest organized in support of PTI-backed Independent candidates caused disruptions and obstructions near the District Election Commission office in Rawalpindi.
As tensions rise after the protest, PTI leaders and workers get caught in legal proceedings. It increases the concerns of PTI regarding the filed cases against their candidates for holding peaceful protests against alleged rigged election results.
However, the protests came after PTI workers and supporters took to the streets nationwide yesterday. The protests came at the call of imprisoned PTI founder Imran Khan. They protested, accusing the system of electoral fraud and vote manipulation in the 2024 general elections.
Several PTI workers, leaders, candidates, voters, and supporters rallied in several constituencies, alleging election interference to undermine their democratic mandate.
Meanwhile, PTI held protests in several cities, including Lahore, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Sumundari, and Manshera. As well as Multan, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Karachi, Hyderabad, Islamabad, and Gujrat.
