Gymnast Ana Barbosu received Olympic medal after a court order
Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu received a Olympic bronze medal which was first awarded to her US rival Jordan Chiles following a court order. The court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) gave this decision.
This decision brought an end to the dispute surrounding the medal’s original award to Jordan Chiles. Following this decision, Ana expressed excitement at receiving the bronze medal.
Ana stated she did not expect the medal to be so heavy, but she would wear it day and night if this is what it takes to have it. It came in aftermath of gymnastics women’s floor exercise final on August 5, 2024 at Paris Olympcis.
The competition was already intense before Jordan Chiles took her turn. Two Romanian gymnasts, Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, were tied with a score of 13.700.
Jordan had a chance to win her first individual Olympic medal. It all came down to a tiny margin of just one-tenth of a point. She performed and afterward, she was given a score of 13.666, which put her in fifth place.
However, USA Gymnastics Coach Cecile Landi noticed a possible mistake in Jordan’s score and asked the judges to review it. A few minutes later, the judges changed Jordan’s score by adding 0.1 points. It brought her total to 13.766 and earned her the bronze medal by securing a third spot.
This win was historic because it marked the first time that Balck women secured all three Olympic spots in this event. Unfortunately, the celebration didn’t last long due to other events that followed when Ana challenged her win in CAS.
CAS court ruled that Jordan’s initial score was 13.666 and this should be maintained which placed the Romanian gymnast in the third spot with 13.700. Hence, gymnast Ana Barbosu received the Olympic bronze medal.
