Imran Khan showed willingness to talk with Army

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan recently showed a willingness to talk with the Pakistan Army and asked to appoint a negotiator for dialogue. He expressed he is open to dialogue with the military while emphasizing that his criticism of the military has always been constructive.

He said the political opponents were like drowning ships. Hence, they cling to the May 9 riots for their political survival. He also criticized PPP and PML-N for allegedly trying to create conflict between PTI and the military to undermine his party.

Imran stated he and his party are ready to negotiate with the military. They will start a dialogue after the army appoints its representative.

He emphasized that they have never lobbed accusations at the military. However, their stance has always been one of constructive criticism of the army.

It is significant to note that Imran Khan has appointed Mehmood Khan Achakzai to represent PTI in negotiations with the army. Mehmood Khan Achakzai is head of PkMAP (Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party).

Imran also spoke of “military missteps” in the past. He linked his criticism to General Yahya Khan for the separation of Bangladesh. He also mentioned the role of General Zia ul Haq in Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s execution.

Imran Khan showed this willingness to talk with the Army in an informal conversation with some journalists. This meeting happened at Adiala Jail on July 30, 2024.

Journalists questioned him about what led to a sudden change in his stance citing his previous allegations against the military.

He clarified that he never made accusations against the army though he has only criticized them. He said it is wrong to suggest that Pakistan’s military has never committed any mistake.
