Death of Gilaman Wazir in Islamabad attack caused public outrage

The death of Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) activist Gilaman Wazir in the Islamabad attack caused widespread public outrage. Gilaman was also a well-known Pashtun poet.

He died after suffering from a brutal and fatal attack by dozens of unknown people in Islamabad on July 7, 2024. The attackers beat and stabbed him multiple times when he was on his way to Islamabad.

Following this incident, he underwent medical treatment at Islamabad’s PIMS (Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences) Hospital. However, he could not survive his fatal injuries for more than three days and ultimately died.

PTM co-founder Mohsin Dawar condemned the death of Gilaman. He called him a harmonious poet who loved incredibly for his Afghan country. Mohsin claims the deceased will always reside in their hearts.

He also stated only a few people could express their oppressive circumstances as Gilaman did. He affirmed that his poetry will inspire incoming generations.

Gilaman was a key figure in PTM who fought for Pashtun and Baloch rights. PTM is a social movement for the basic human rights of the Baloch and Pashtun communities based in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Hence, the death of Gilaman Wazir has caused widespread concern among those communities. They are strongly condemning his murder. They also alleged Pakistan security forces attacked and tortured him.

Many PTM leaders and human rights activists have condemned the demise of Gilaman Wazir. They believe the attack on Gilaman was Pakistan-Army sponsored. According to them, PTM leaders have repeatedly faced arrests and torture at the hands of security forces.

It is significant to note that many independent sources claim Gilaman followed a history of enforced disappearance and illegal custody by Pakistani intelligence and military agencies.

Gilaman was arrested from Peshawar Air Base in July 2023 and released on bail in January 2024. However, his life came to an end after five months.
