Sri Lankan cricketer Dhammika Niroshana shot dead in Galle
An unknown man shot dead Sri Lankan cricketer and former captain of the U-19 cricket team, Dhammika Niroshana near his residence in Ambalandgoda. This incident happened on July 16, 2024 night in the Galle district, southern province of Sri Lanka.
According to local media, Dhammika was with his wife and two children when an unknown person shot him with a 12-bore gun. Police believe that the murder of Dhammika is linked to a dispute between criminal underworld gangs.
Police in Sri Lanka are thoroughly investigating this murder. Their investigations are underway to arrest the suspect involved in Dhammika’s murder. Police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa told media reporters that this murder seemed to be the result of gang rivalry.
This is because Galle has a reputation for criminal activity and gang-related murders as several of its victims had links to cricket. The background information further complicates the investigation into the murder case of Dhammika.
Nihal revealed Dhammika left the country three months before when his close ally Dasun Manawadu was murdered in the same region. Now, his murder happened on his return to Sri Lanka.

Moreover, law enforcement officials are investigating a possible connection between Dhammika’s murder and the 2016 murder of H. Premasiri. H. Premasiri was a former cricket administrator in the southern area. He was also a first-class cricket player.
When his murder took place near his residence, there was speculation that his killing had anything to do with a global scheme to manipulate cricket matches at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
However, further case proceedings will reveal why and who shot dead Sri Lankan cricketer Dhammika Niroshana. Dhammika was a 41-year-old cricketer who initiated his career for the Sri Lankan U19 team in 2000.
He represented the Galle Cricket Club in 12 first-class matches and 8 List-A games between 2001 and 2004. He scored over 300 runs while taking 19 wickets in his cricket career.
