Players call ITIA double standards after Jannik Sinner escaped doping ban
Tennis players, including top-tenth Denis Shapovalov, call ITIA having double standards after Jannik escaped a doping ban. ITIA refers to the International Tennis Integrity Agency.
Denis was quick to allege that Jannik had preferential treatment when ITIA announced on August 20, 2024, that an independent tribunal cleared him to compete going forward.
This announcement came after Jannik failed two drug tests this year although he got clearance for all his charges for not clearing drugs test. He can now participate in further tennis tournaments following his clearance.
Moreover, British Liam Broady is among the tennis players who call ITIA for favoring Jannik and having double standards.
He said this was not right whether Jannik was doping or not players endure similar circumstances as Jannik. Other players must wait months or even years until their innocence is proven. It does not look good.
Tara Moore, the former British Number one in doubles, was suspended for 19 months after failing a drug test and cleared last year. She highlighted the difference between her case and Jannik’s case.
Tara stated she guessed the images of top players matter the most. Only the impartial tribunal’s assessment of elite players becomes “accurate and correct.” However, it is questioned in her case. It simply does not make sense.
Following this, Denis stated he can’t even begin to imagine the feelings that every other player who faced a ban for using drugs is going through. He categorically stated different rules for different players.
However, Jannik’s coach Darren Cahill wished to put the drug incident behind him. He stated they are not looking for any sorrow or anything because they are quite thankful there is no ban attached. He emphasized that Jannik is in an unfortunate situation and he would never intentionally do anything.
