Indian Gukesh became world’s youngest championship challenger
Indian chess genius D Gukesh made a record and became the world’s youngest chess championship challenger who will face number 1 Ding Liren to become world chess champion.
Gukesh is only 17 years old and has become the youngest contender to win the 2024 FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament at Toronto breaking the 40-year record of the great Garry Kasparov.
The 2024 Candidates Tournament was an eight-player chess tournament. It was held to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship 2024.
This tournament happened at The Great Hall in Toronto, Canada, and continued from April 3–22, 2024. D Gukesh climbed above all of the candidates in the 2024 Candidates tournament.
Indian Gukesh scored an impressive 9 points out of a possible 14 and became the world’s youngest chess championship challenger against the reigning World Chess Champion, Liren Ding.
He knocked out Garry Kasparov who qualified in 1984 when he was 22-year-old. Gukesh became not only the youngest candidate to win the competition but he also became the first teenager to do so.
However, Gukesh was not considered the front-runner going into the Toronto competition. Instead, American chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura and Italian Fabiano Caruana were favorites.
However, Gukesh overcame the odds to win. He became the first Indian to win the Candidates Chess Tournament title since 2014. He held Hikaru Nakamura on a dramatic tie. But his fate depended on the opposite board, Ian Nepomniachtchi vs Fabiano Caruana.

Ian and Fabiano fought for 109 moves before agreeing to a draw (that was necessary for Gukesh to win). Meanwhile, there was a lot of drama on this day. It appeared, for a moment that Gukesh would win today before Fabiano made a mistake in his 41st move.
It opened the door to a draw against Ian. Later, Ian returned the favor giving Fabiano the upper hand. However, the event finally ended with the victory of Gukesh when the Ian vs Fabiano game finished with a tie.
Now, the youngest teenager Gukesh will face the world number 1 chess champion Ding Liren in World Chess Championship 2024 later this year.
