TikTok sued the US government for banning it in the country

Chinese app TikTok sued the US government against a law to ban it in the country, making its future uncertain. TikTok filed a case against American law that would force the app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell it or face a national ban.

US President Joe Biden signed a bill that gives ByteDance nine months to sell the video app in April. If a deal is already in the works, it provides an additional three months to ByteDance.

This bill is called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. Both houses of Congress passed it with unanimous support.

However, TikTok, claimed in its legal petition that the bill violates the legal and technical requirements of selling the app. It is simply not possible to sell TikTok to another party commercially. TikTok filed this petition in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

According to TikTok’s petition, Congress has implemented a law that binds a single-named speech platform to a permanent nationwide ban for the first time in history.

It prevents every American from participating in a unique online community with more than 1 billion people worldwide. Hence, TikTok sued the US government.

Congressmen from the United States have considered TikTok’s foreign ownership a threat to national security for a long time. The former US President tried to declare TikTok an illegal platform with an executive order in 2020. However, he did not succeed at that time.

So, concerns of US officials increased over China’s growing influence on the international stage over time. It resulted in recent US legislation to ban TikTok.

However, TikTok invested over $2 billion in an initiative called “Project Texas” before the passing of US law. This project aimed to better protect user data in the United States from foreign interference. Despite this, US politicians seemed determined to move the US bill forward in Congress.
