South Korea opened deep fake porn investigation against Telegram

Law enforcement officials in South Korea have opened a deep fake porn investigation against Telegram. This investigation came against Telegram for allegedly spreading deep fake porn including explicit images of teens made by artificial intelligence (AI).

Deep fake porn is explicit content in which user’s faces are digitally placed using AI technology on other sexual pictures or videos.

This investigation comes after widespread public outrage following digital deep fake pornography featuring South Korean women’s real faces on Telegram.

South Korean broadcaster last month claimed university students were running an illegal Telegram chatroom where they shared deep fake pornographic content of female classmates. It is just one of several high-profile cases raising public outrage further.

Woo Jong-soo is the head of the Investigation Bureau at the National Police Agency. He said the National Police Agency of South Korea opened an investigation to stop these deep fake porn crimes.

Woo said Telegram had not responded to their previous requests for account information. When they were investigating crimes linked to Telegram. He also revealed police received 88 reports of deep fake porn in just the past week alone and they have identified 24 suspects.

It is significant to note that South Korean authorities initiated this investigation after French authorities arrested Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in Paris last month.

Pavel is facing several charges of failing to control extremist and illegal content on Telegram. Investigating Chief Woo also said South Korean police have requested cooperation from French authorities in their investigation against Telegram.

Activists in South Korea claim citizens are suffering from an outbreak of digital sex crimes including revenge porn and spycams. They criticize the national government for insufficient legislation to punish sex offenders.

Following this criticism, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol called relevant officials to investigate digital sex crimes thoroughly and remove them completely.
