If Earth doubled in size, what would happen?

Have you ever wondered if Earth doubled in size, what would happen, and what would be its effect on our planet? This article discusses this hypothetical phenomenon.

The weight of an object on the Earth’s surface would nearly double if its size doubled once. This shows everything on Earth will weigh twice as much. For example, if you weigh eighty kilograms, it will go to one hundred and sixty kilograms.

Imagine if you consistently carried a bag that weighed the same as you do now in a scenario of doubled Earth-size. Waking will be difficult and additional weight will cause you to exhaust quickly.

If Earth doubled in size, humans’ and animal’s skeletons would get stronger and denser. But it would be dangerous for our health as people would become less active and less willing to exercise owing to excess weight burden. It could result in health issues related to obesity and a lack of physical activity.

Due to the double size, Earth’s internal temperature will rise due to increasing molten material present under the surface of Earth. As a result, the molten rocks under subsurface layers of Earth will become active.

It would cause inactive volcanoes to become more active and volcanic eruptions. It would overall increase instability on Earth. So, humans would find it harder to adjust to natural calamities like earthquakes and volcanoes.

The double size of the Earth also increases gravity which would be challenging for the growth of trees. In plants, water and nutrients go from the base to the top of the plant against the force of gravity. The energy needed to raise water in the tree will rise as gravity rises.

Hence, the water would only reach half of the tree’s height if it did not have access to additional sun energy. This is because trees get their energy from sunlight conversion into energy. As a result, trees would not be able to grow regularly and would be significantly shorter.

The impact of the double-size Earth would have increased its gravity. It would cause the Moon to completely break apart, converting into stony rings like the rings of Saturn planet.
