Upper Dir landslide killed 9 children among 12 family members

A massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall and a flash flood killed 9 children among 12 family members in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This tragic incident happened when a landslide hit the victim’s home in the Maidan area of Upper Dir in the early morning hours of August 29, 2024.

Law enforcement officials recovered all 12 dead bodies buried under debris and sent them to the hospital for legal medical formalities. One man, two women, and nine children fell victim to the deadliest landslide.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Government Information Adviser Barrister Muhammad Saif expressed condolences over this sad incident.

He stated they are standing with grieved families in difficult moments. He also instructed relevant authorities including Rescue 1122 to be on high alert. It came after a high flood alert in the province due to a rare August cyclonic storm.

Barrister Saif also stated the government has issued an advisor regarding landslides and floods in the provincial mountainous areas. He claimed to take precautionary measures to keep loss low in the aftermath of natural catastrophes. He urged people to avoid going near rivers, streams, etc.

The Meteorological Department of Pakistan has already predicted widespread intense rain with windstorms alert. This alert comes in the aftermath of heavy monsoon cycles across the country within the next 24 hours.

The Meteorological Office released a statement heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Sindh, northeast, South Balochistan, and Central Punjab. Potohar region, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are also among alert areas.

It also reported heavy rainfall caused landslides in Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan.

Moreover, the Sindh government has closed schools in the provincial capital city, Karachi due to the threat of the Ansa cyclone. The same cyclone entered India and evacuated thousands of people to prevent an inevitable crisis.
