Section 144 imposed in Punjab & Islamabad-banned rallies, protests
The administration has imposed Section 144 in Punjab and Islamabad while preventing rallies, protests, and sit-ins. This ban comes just before the opposition party rallies including PTI and JUIF.
The administration based in Islamabad has issued a warning for facing severe consequences for any violations. Its spokesperson stated it was not allowed to violate Section 144 at any cost.
It is significant to note that Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is protesting against a massive increase in electricity costs. However, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and other religious organizations declared nationwide protests against the Supreme Court ruling in the Mubarak Sani case.
Mubarak is spending a jail term for allegations of publishing and distributing a banned book named “Tafseer-i-Sagheer” being Qadiyani. It was a violation under the Punjab Holy Quran (Printing and Recording) (Amendment) Act enforced in 2021. Supreme Court yesterday conducted a hearing on Mubarak’s petition for bail.
First, the Supreme Court granted bail to Mubarak but later considered the Punjab government’s petition to review the bail decision. It led to JUI-F protests.
On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership has also declared they will hold countrywide protests today to demand the release of Imran Khan.
Following protest calls of PTI, JI, and JUIF, the government has appointed law enforcement officials in Islamabad to sustain peace and order. It also instructed the public to avoid any unlawful activities.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 throughout the province from July 26 to July 28. Its notice makes clear that protests, sit-ins, rallies, and public gatherings are prohibited during this time because they could serve as easy targets for terrorist attacks.
It emphasized the provincial administration would ensure the implementation of this order. This decision in Punjab is due to the current state of law and order, and security threats.
