SC issued notice to Faisal Vawda & Mustafa Kamal for court contempt
The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) issued a notice of contempt of court to senators Faisal Vawda and Mustafa Kamal. This notice came in response to their press conferences challenging the judiciary.
The court issued notice after talking sou moto action of Faisal Vawda’s explosive press conference yesterday. The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Qazi Faez Isa, with Justices Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Irfan Saadat Khan conducted a hearing of this case.
CJP Qazi Faez Isa said Institutions belong to the people, and defaming them is not a service to the country. He then requested the attorney general to read the constitution and laws relating to contempt of court and freedom of speech.
He said it seemed politicians held news conferences with a specific objective, in mind. No one is allowed to harm the institutions. He also stated Mustafa Kamal also held a press conference after Faisal Vawda. Instead, they should have spoken in assembly.
Afterward, SC judges issued a court contempt notice to Faisal Vawda and Mustafa Kamal. They also asked them to appear in the next hearing on June 5, 2024.
Faisal did a dramatic press conference yesterday in which he attacked the justices of Islamabad High Court (IHC) for their letter. The IHC judges wrote a letter claiming that spy agencies interfere with judicial matters.
He said enough is enough. Stop focusing on institutions. If there is any interference by institutions, they provide evidence and they will stand together against it.
However, he also questioned the citizenship of IHC Justice Babar Sattar. He accused Justice Babar of holding a US nationality. He claimed he owned a business interest in a private school there.
On the other hand, Mustafa Kamal also held a press conference after Faisal Vawda in the later part of the day. He called for dual citizenship law implementation in all institutions (directing towards the citizenship of Justice Babar Sattar).
He said IHC suggested that there is no constitutional prohibition on a dual citizen’s ability to hold the office of a judge. However, a parliamentary member holding a dual nationality is sent home.
Meanwhile, IHC’s public relations officer stated the citizenship of Justice Babar Sattar. He said Justice Babar has never had any nationality other than Pakistan.
