Pakistani anchor and athlete Mona Khan arrested in Greece
Greek Police arrested Pakistani anchor and athlete Mona Khan in Greece for allegedly displaying the Pakistani flag while on a hiking journey. Mona Khan is a journalist and a marathon runner from Pakistan.
Greek police reportedly arrested Mona Khan on May 24, 2024, and shifted her to jail. They will present her in court on May 27, 2024. Meanwhile, the coach of Mona Khan, Malik Muhammad Yousaf, told media reporters that Greek police mistreated the Pakistani athlete and seized her cell phone.
According to Yousaf Khan, Mona was trekking while leaving behind her seven-year-old son in Athens. He claimed that one hour before her arrest, he spoke with her, who revealed that Greek police were interrogating her about raising the Pakistani flag.
She reportedly claimed she was taken into custody by the police after announcing that she would wave the Pakistani flag. She also made a plea to the Pakistani authorities to intervene on her behalf, claiming that the Greek police had abused her.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, confirmed that Greek police have arrested Pakistani anchor and athlete Mona Khan. She claimed the Pakistani Embassy in Athens has brought up this issue with the Greek authorities.
According to Mumtaz Zahra, Pakistani officials have requested consular access to Mona Khan. She also stated that the Pakistani Embassy is investigating the circumstances behind the arrest of Mona Khan. They are also in contact with Mona’s running coach, Malik Yousaf.
However, the arrest of Mona Khan came after she traveled to Greece to participate in a sports event. It is unclear yet why exactly led Greek police to arrest Mona Khan.
