Pakistan strongly condemned Israeli attack on refuge camp in Rafah

The Foreign Office of Pakistan strongly condemned the Israeli attack on the refugee camp of Palestinians in Rafah. It released a statement saying Israel’s attack is yet another breach of International humanitarian law by Israeli occupation forces.

According to the statement, Israel targeted civilians who were displaced earlier because of Israeli bombardment. The innocent civilians took shelter in a refugee camp in Rafah.

However, this condemnation came after Israel launched airstrikes on camps housing Palestinian refugees in the southern city of Gaza Strip, Rafah.

According to Palestinian health officials, at least 45 people have died due to the deadliest Israeli airstrikes on May 26, 2024. Several civilians became trapped under burning rubble. The Health Ministry of Gaza reported that the majority of wounded and dead people were women and children.

Apart from Pakistan, several Muslim countries, including Maldives, have also strongly condemned the Israeli attack on Rafah refugees. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also expressed disappointment at the Rafah attack.

Antonio condemned the actions of Israel, which killed several innocent civilians who were only seeking shelter from this deadly conflict. He emphasized this horror must stop as there is no safe refugee for Palestinians in Gaza.

It is significant to note that these attacks came two days after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to stop its military operations in Rafah. ICJ warned Israel that more than half of Gaza’s population had taken refuge there after Israel’s fierce military operations in Gaza City.

Hence, this attack blatantly disregards the interim orders issued by ICJ on May 24, 2024. It directed Israel to immediately cease its military offensive in Rafah under the Genocide Convention. This is due to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions that civilians are facing in Gaza.

Earlier, South Africa filed the initial complaint against Israel in December 2023, calling Israel’s activities in the Gaza Strip “genocidal.” It claimed that Israel intended to destroy the Palestinians in ways specified under the 1948 Genocide Convention.
