Jamaat-e-Islami postponed sit-in protest after successful negotiation with govt
The opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) postponed its nearly 14-day-long sit-in protest after successfully negotiating with the government. JI delayed its protest movement after the government pledged to fulfill their demands.
Reducing high electricity bills and reviewing agreements with independent power producers (IPPs) by the government are among those demands. It was the fifth session of negotiations with the government’s delegate at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi last night.
Jamaat-e-Islami Emir and senior leader Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman announced they postponed the sit-in protest but did not end it. He said to formally announce the decision to postpone the protest demonstration at a rally today.
However, he issued a warning that if the government did not meet their demands, they would hold another sit-in. He stated JI would announce their future course of action at a protest on Islamabad highway today.
This protest movement caught momentum after contracts of the Pakistani government with the IPPs came to the limelight as electricity consumers were paying heavy taxes. These taxes are attributed to payments made to IPPs for electricity availability.

Following this, JI has been holding a sit-in protest to raise its voice against deals with IPPs and massive inflation since July 6, 2024. The protest movement started in Karachi and proceeded to Rawalpindi last weekend.
Deputy Emir of JI Liaquat Baloch addressed participants in the sit-in and stated the government had agreed to gradually lower taxes on salaried class and tax landowners.
According to Liaquat, the government will also examine and review its agreements with IPPs. It will form a special task form for this purpose and will submit its report to Prime Minsiter Shehbaz Sharif within a month. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Information Minister Ataullah Tarar reportedly signed the negotiating agreement.
