Islamabad court issued non-bailable arrest warrant for Sher Afzal Marwat

A local court of Islamabad issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for top PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf) leader Sher Afzal Marwat. This arrest warrant comes for the alleged involvement of Sher Afzal in unlawful construction.

Authorities filed a case against him at the Naseerabad Police Station. He is facing accusations of building on property close to the Thaallian Motorway Interchange without permission from relevant authorities.

The court’s judicial magistrate had instructed police to arrest PTI MNA Sher Afzal Marwat. It also ordered to bring him into court on July 30, 2024.

However, this order came after PTI suspended the primary membership of Marwat due to disciplinary violations on July 12, 2024. PTI Secretary Omar Ayub issued notification of his suspension.

He stated they took this action following Marwat’s breach of party discipline. They have established an inquiry committee to investigate the matter.

The committee will investigate his statements and actions that allegedly caused significant damage to PTI. The notification also emphasized PTI has already removed Marwat from the political and core committees.

On the other hand, the decision of the Supreme Court regarding reserved seats allowed party leaders elected as independents to join PTI and claim seats.

PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan announced on July 13, 2023, that his party had compiled a list of MNAs, including Marwat, following the Supreme Court ruling on the reserved seats issue.

He promised to deliver the lists to the Pakistan Election Commission (ECP) in 15 days. The next day, he claimed his party’s parliamentary members were facing pressure to change their allegiance.

He cited the alleged abduction of PTI MNA Ameer Sultan to undermine their legal process of submitting affidavits of MNAs to ECP. He strongly condemned it.

However, the recent move of the Islamabad local court that issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Sher Afzal Marwat may be considered “political victimization.”
