IHC ordered FIA to proceed against campaigners targeting Justice Babar Sattar
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to proceed against campaigners maligning Justice Babar Sattar.
It urged FIA to pursue legal action against people, involved in spreading Justice Babar’s personal information on social media. On the other hand, the IHC registrar’s office sent a letter to social media networking site Twitter X.
The registrar’s office requested X to identify the accounts that were part of a harmful and defamatory campaign against Justice Babar. It mentioned that the accused accounts published false information about Justice Babar to malign his character and leaked his private information.
All these legal proceedings came after some social media accounts leaked the private data of Justice Babar and propaganda posts against him on X. A three-member bench heard Justice Babar’s complaint regarding the data leaks.
Justices Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, and Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan were part of this bench. They received a report from the FIA during the hearing.
The FIA organized a three-member team to investigate the complaint of Justice Babar. They also identified five people, including two bloggers, Chaudhry Saeed Akbar, and Ihsan Chatta. They have involvement in a malicious campaign against Justice Babar.
Additional Attorney General Barrister Munawar Iqbal Duggal reported it to court. He also informed the court that only two alleged people responded to FIA notices which they sent to them.
Barrister Munawar Iqbal said one of the suspects, a journalist from Karachi, removed the critical post about Justice Babar. They traced him with the help of NADRA records.
Barrister Munawar Iqbal also revealed they tracked 39 accounts, and 29 were inaccessible. Moreover, NADRA software could not identify a few accounts that were allegedly being run out of Pakistan.
He also said the major problem for the investigators is that campaigners are running social media accounts from outside Pakistan (most likely US). So, he said they don’t have access to their IP address when something from abroad is published.
Following this, IHC ordered the Cyber Crime Wing of FIA to contact the U.S. embassy through appropriate sources to proceed with legal action against malicious campaigners.
