Gang leaders of begging mafia will face 10 years imprisonment in Punjab
Gang leaders of the begging mafia will face strict punishment with 10 years imprisonment for forced begging in Punjab. The Punjab Home Department has recommended harsh penalties for people who take advantage of women, old people, and children by indulging them in begging practices.
This recommendation provides victims justice and eliminates the beggar mafia active in different regions of Punjab. Hence, the Punjab Home Department has sent the summary to the Punjab Cabinet for approval.
According to this summary, an amendment comes with a new law in Punjab. It imposes a heavy punishment of PKR 2 million fines for gang leaders of the begging mafia, who will also face 10 years imprisonment.
However, if crime offenders fail to pay the above fine, they will serve an additional three years of imprisonment. Hence, the Punjab Government intends to make clear that it will not tolerate forced begging by imposing strict punishments on begging mafia gang leaders.
The new law would also classify forced begging as a crime for which there is no possibility of bail. It means authorities will arrest those who commit this offense and conduct their trial without giving them bail.
The Secretary of the Punjab Home Department. Noor-ul-Amin Mengal announced that there was no specific legal framework to punish begging mafia gang leaders. Hence, they are implementing this law emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for forced begging.
It stated that forced beggars do not deserve any lenience. Noor-ul-Amin Mengal expressed optimism that new policies will significantly reduce the exploitation of vulnerable people, particularly women and children.
Forced begging is a crucial issue in Punjab and other parts of Pakistan. The majority of the begging gang mafia kidnap children. And then drag them into a life of slavery by begging mostly at shrines. Hence, thousands of children fall victim to forced begging in Pakistan every year.
