20 Gujranwala Power Company officers arrested for overbilling
20 officers of Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) have been arrested for overbilling and corruption for crores of rupees. It came after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) conducted a comprehensive investigation.
FIA Investigation exposed corruption in GEPCO and mentioned that company officials stole money intended for the national treasury. Most of the arrested officers include nine in Grade 17 and eleven in Grade 16. They belong to GEPCO’s revenue and accounts department.
Following the FIA investigation, officers were taken to the police station for interrogation. Eventually, the FIA arrested them.
FIA presented the 20 arrested Gujranwala Power Company officers before the court on April 17, 2024. They also obtained a two-day physical remand for their investigation.
The initial investigation by FIA revealed a significant amount of Rs 105 million that arrested officers fraudulently transferred to personal accounts.
The accused officers reportedly tampered with records. They made up false entries to make money appear to have been deposited from customers’ electricity bills. However, they kept the money for themselves.
Five revenue officers, 6 divisional accounts officers, assistant managers, additional managers, and other staff have accusations of GEPCO corruption.
On the other hand, GEPCO officials have cut down the electricity connections of FIA offices. According to GEPCO sources, FIA owed millions of rupees in unpaid electrical bills; that had accumulated over several years. However, it seemed GEPCO officials cut down the electricity connection of FIA offices in protest against the arrest of their colleagues.
GEPCO officials also went to the FIA office reportedly to express strong opposition to FIA’s move after knowing the arrest of GEPCO officers.
According to sources, the senior administrative officers at GEPCO headquarters were concerned when they found no money deposited into the company’s accounts. However, they chose to keep the situation quiet.
