NHS data stolen in cyber attack published on dark web

Cybercriminals have stolen data of NHS Dumfries and Galloway, publishing a large volume of patient data on the dark web in a cyber attack. NHS is a health board in Scotland that promotes health services for the people of Dumfries and Galloway.

NHS provided some facts as proof that cyber attackers had accessed the organization’s data in March 2024. They also warned NHS to publish more data on the dark web if they don’t pay them a significant money amount.

Julie White is the new chief executive of NHS Dumfries and Galloway Health board. She called the publication of stolen data from NHS a clear criminal act.

She explained that work was already underway with other national agencies to review what cybercriminals had published on the dark web. The agencies include the Scottish government and the National Cyber Security Center.

Moreover, she said they should not be surprised by this publication because it is how these criminal groups work. NHS Dumfries and Galloway has awareness of how this may make patients and staff more worried and anxious.

Meanwhile, Colin Smyth expressed deep concern about a cyber attack on NHS that published its stolen data on the dark web. He called data publication a “worrying development.” Colin is a Scottish Parliament member.

Colin said there is no doubt it will cause a great deal of anxiety for patients and staff of NHS. He expressed his views while talking to BBC’s Good Morning Scotland program.

He also said it is significant that the NHS make every effort to reach out to the impacted individuals. Likewise, they did when the first data went public. But if they cannot do that due to substantial data, NHS must contact at least the most vulnerable people in early stage.

Moreover, Julie stated the information that cybercriminals publish on the dark web is inaccessible to the majority. However, she emphasized that they continue to follow the guidance that national law enforcement agencies provide them.
