Delhi government imposed heavy fines for deep water crisis
The government of Delhi imposed heavy fines of INR 2,000 for wasting water in the national capital during the water crisis and extreme heat waves. Water Minister of Delhi, Atishi Marlena, made this announcement and urged residents to use water cautiously.
According to this announcement, Delhi is experiencing a severe heatwave and a water shortage due to Haryana blocking Delhi’s fair share of water. Hence, water conservation becomes crucial in these circumstances.
Moreover, the Delhi government stated they have observed that significant water waste occurs in several parts of the city. Moreover, business centers and construction sites use illegal connections from home water supplies.
Hence, cracking down on this misuse of water is mandatory because the water supply is meant for domestic use only. They have instructed the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board to send out 200 crackdown teams throughout the city.
Anyone involved in car washing with pipers, overflowing water tanks, and illegal residential water supplies for businesses or construction will come under this crackdown.

According to the Delhi government, the crackdown teams will be active from 8 a.m. tomorrow (May 30). They impose a fine of INR 2,000 on anyone found wasting water. They will also disconnect any illegal water connection on construction sites or commercial establishments.
It is significant to mention the Indian political party Aam Admi Party (AAP) is ruling Delhi. They accused the BJP-ruled state of Haryana of blocking Delhi’s fair share of water since May 1, 2024. AAP party has also threatened to file a case against the BJP in the Supreme Court if the city’s Yamuna water supply does not improve.
According to Minister Atishi, water scarcity is a problem in many parts of Delhi. They are in constant communication with Haryana regarding this matter. However, the Delhi government imposed heavy fines and launched heavy crackdowns considering the uncertain water supply conditions.
