Barack Obama sister Rita Auma tear-gassed by Kenyan Police
Kenyan police tear-gassed Rita Auma Obama, the sister of former US President Barack Obama, during a protest in Nairobi’s CBD. CBD refers to the Central Business District.
Rita is a Kenyan-British community activist. The harsh action from Kenyan police came after she actively participated in anti-finance bill 2024 protests to support thousands of Kenyans.
Rita joined Kenyan protestors in CBD Nairobi when all this chaotic scenario unfolded. She was talking with CNN in a live interview during the protest.
Rita accused the Kenyan government of ignoring protests from Kenyan youngsters. She said Kenyan youngsters had turned out in force to oppose controversial tax proposals in Finance Bill 2024.
Meanwhile, Rita Auma faced tear gas from a massive container operated by Kenyan police. She barely avoided the tear gas container as she ran for safety with several other protestors. During the chaos, Rita was seen covered in smoke from massive tear gas as she tried to continue her interview.
However, the effects of the tear gas finally made her too exhausted to continue, so she had to stop her interview with CNN. Rita stated she came here because of what was happening to Kenyans.
According to Rita, the people of Kenya are protesting their rights by carrying flags and banners. She remarked it before the Kenyan police threw more tear gas to disperse protestors.
Meanwhile, she also said she could not see anymore as she had been tear-gassed. When Kenyan police tear-gassed Rita Auma, the sister of Barack Obama, protestors further got furious at this act.
Protestors claim police used excessive force with massive tear gas despite their non-violent protests. One of them said police are puppets. They are just following the orders of President Ruto. We are young people and fed up of this country.
However, this action from police came when protestors threatened to hit parliament buildings. They were on high alert from government officials. They intervened to stop the protestor’s march to Bunge Towers using tear gas. Rita was also among those protestors.
All these protests came when the government proposed the high-tax Finance Bill 2024. The people of Kenya have been running significant online and physical campaigns against this bill for over a month.
