The hideous murder of 24-year-old Sheena Bora, reportedly committed by her mother Indrani Mukerjea, the wife of media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, has captivated the nation. However, the authorities are still investigating the murder.

Several speculations have circulated in the media, ranging from money to property to ‘honor killing’ for the murder cause. However, some facts are indisputable. 

INX media CEO Indrani Mukerjea was arrested for the alleged murder of Sheena Bora, causing nationwide shockwaves in 2015. Indrani is a wealthy media executive. She married media tycoon Peter Mukerjea.

Early Life of Indrani Mukerjea

Indrani Mukerjea was born in Guwahati, Assam, to Assamese parents Upendra Kumar Bora and Durga Rani Bora. She received the name Pori Bora at birth and was born in Guwahati in 1972.

After finishing school, she relocated to Shillong to pursue further studies at Lady Keane College. However, little is known about the childhood and early life of Indrani as she rose to prominence in 2015 with a high-profile Sheena Bora murder case.

Controversial birth of Sheena Bora and First Marriage

Earlier, there was a conception Indrani met Siddharth Das in 1986 and fell in love. They had a daughter, Sheena, in February 1987, and a son, Mikhail, in September 1988. 

However, this simple fact didn’t remain the same until Indrani blew it making absurd claims that the biological father of Sheena and Mikhail is her father Upendra Kumar Bora. 

On the other hand, Siddharth claims both Sheena and Mikhail are his children. According to Siddharth, both children were born out of wedlock. However, Upendra denied Indrani’s claims that he is the biological father of Sheena and Mikhail.

Second Marriage

Indrani went to Kolkata, leaving her children in the care of her parents in Guwahati in 1990. There, she studied computers and stayed as a paying guest.

Several months after moving to Kolkata, she met Sanjeev Khanna. They married in 1993 and welcomed a daughter named Vidhie in 1997. They relocated to Mumbai in 2001.

Third Marriage 

Indrani met Peter Mukerjea and moved in with him while she awaited her divorce from Sanjeev Khanna in 2002. Indrani married Peter Mukerjea in November 2003.

Following marriage, Vidhie Khanna moved in with the Mukerjeas and adopted the Mukerjea name. Peter married Indrani for the second time as he had a son, Rahul Mukerjea from his first wife, Shabnam Mukerjea.

Indrani lies about Sheena and Mikhail 

Indrani introduced her children, Sheena and Mikhail Bora, to Peter as her younger siblings in 2005. Sheena Bora moved in with the Mukerjeas in 2006. 

Meanwhile, Sheena and Rahul Mukerjea started developing a cordial relationship. There are speculations Indrani wasn’t happy with Sheena dating Rahul who was once introduced as Sheena’s stepbrother.

Sudden Disappearance of Sheena

The family affairs of Indrani deeply merged in dark secrets appeared with the sudden disappearance of Sheena on April 24, 2012. On the same day, Rahul Mukerjea (Sheena’s stepbrother, whom she was dating) received a breakup SMS on his phone.

Her mother, Indrani, stated that Sheena had moved to the United States for higher education. However, a missing First Information Report (FIR) was never made. Sheena was never seen after April 24, 2012.

Mumbai Police went to Indrani’s Worli apartment for investigation upon the insistence of Rahul Mukerjea. The staff of Indrani told Police Indrani was out of India.

When Indrani returned, she went to the Worli police station and told the officers that Rahul was trying to pursue Sheena. Hence, Sheena relocated to the United States without telling him.

Discovery of Death and Confession

After three years of Sheena’s disappearance, Indrani Mukeerjee’s investigation began following a tip-off in 2015. Police arrested her driver, Shyamvar Pinturam Rai for illegal weapon possession on Aug 21, 2015.

Shyamvar revealed shocking details about Sheena’s death during interrogation. He claimed Indrani plotted and committed the murder with her second husband, Sanjeev Khanna. According to Shyamvar, the murder allegedly occurred on April 24, 2012, when he, Indrani, and Sanjeev met Sheena in Bandra.

Sanjaeev strangled Sheena and then carried her dead body to Indrani’s house in Worli, stuffed into a bag, and deposited it in the trunk of the car. Later on, they moved the dead body of Sheena to a jungle in Raigad and burned after which the accused returned to Mumbai.

Arrest and Aftermath of Sheena Bora Murder Case

Following the shocking confession of Shyaram, Mumbai police arrested Indrani Mukerjea on August 25, 2015. Police charged her with murdering Sheena. and Indrani was charged under sections 302 (murder), 201 (disposing evidence or making false statements), 363 (kidnapping), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Mumbai Police took Indrani Mukerjea to the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court where she was detained in police custody. The next day, they arrested Sanjeev Khanna in Kolkata on Aug 26, 2015.

Sanjeev faced charges of kidnapping, murder, loss of evidence, and conspiracy under sections 364, 302, 201, and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code. He reportedly confessed to the crimes charged.

However, the prime suspect Indrani Mukerjea never confessed to the murder of Sheena Bora during the case trial.

Prolonged CBI Investigation of Sheena Bora Murder Case

Law enforcement officials assigned the Sheena Bora murder case to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) upon assessing its complexity in September 2015. CBI instantly filed an FIR against Indrani, Sanjeev, and Shyamvar. After one month, the CBI also arrested the second husband of Indrani, Peter Mukerjea in November 2015.

According to CBI, Indrani, and Peter both planned and murdered Sheena due to her relationship with Rahul Mukerjea. Hence, the CBI filed charges against them for the murder of Sheena in 2016.

However, the CBI special court charged Indrani, Sanjeev, and Peter for the Sheena Bora murder case in 2017. Their charges include conspiracy, kidnapping, destroying evidence, and giving false information.

Bitter relationship between Indrani and Peter Mukerjea

The prolonged murder trial resulted in the marriage breakup of Indrani and Peter as they divorced in 2019 by the Mumbai Family Court. However, the separation of root cause was not only a notorious trial but Peter also could not digest Indrani’s lies who pretended to be the sister of Sheena while being the mother.

The lies of Indrani were unveiled during the investigation of the Sheena Bora Murder Case when Mikhail Bora revealed to police that Indrani was not his sister but his mother. End of Jail Sentence

The CBI special court granted Peter bail due to no evidence against him in 2020. After two years, the Supreme Court also granted bail to Indrani when she had spent six and a half years in jail sentence.

This decision came due to insufficient evidence against Indrani. However, the Sheena Bora murder case trial is in its final stage after its prolonged trial for nine years.

Claims of Indrani on Sheena Bora Murder Case

Indrani claims her daughter Sheena is alive and she is being framed in the alleged Sheena Bora murder case. She made these claims in her recent Netflix documentary series “Buried Truth.” According to Indrani, she did not have a pleasant relationship with Sheena. She remained a strict mother to her which made her pay the price.

Indrani claims Sheena has voluntarily disappeared to punish her for being strict with her. She also stated Sheena is recently residing in Jammu and Kashmir in India.

However, it is significant to note that Peter Mukerjea, Mikhail Bora, and Vidhi Mukerjea all have accused Indrani of murdering Sheena.
