Ben Shelton beat Frances Tiaofe to win U.S Clay Court title
American tennis player Ben Shelton beat his country fellow Frances Tiaofe to win the final title of U.S Men’s Clay Court. Ben Shelton eventually beat Frances Tiaofe in three sets of match series.
Ben won in the opening game by 7-5, but Frances won the next one. Then, Ben quickly found opportunities to break through and regained control of the match by winning the second set at 6-4.
He played an outstanding round taking a break in the fourth game to establish a commanding lead. He maintained that momentum to secure the decisive set at 6-3. Hence, he won 83% of his first-serve points and smashed 11 aces.
Ben Shelton won the youngest championship of the tournament since Andy Roddick in 2022. Ben is 22-year-old while Andy was only 19-year-old when he won the championship title. However, he will move up to No.14 in the ranks next week.
However, this win was also a personal milestone for Ben Shelton. He followed in his father’s footsteps by winning the title. His father, Bryan Shelton won this title in 1992. Bryan is now the coach of Florida Gators men’s tennis.
Ben said his dad won this tournament in 1992. He (Brayan) had a one-up on me. Hence, he had to even things up today. He said it with a smile.
Ben also thanked his father for being an innovator and showing him the way. He said he appreciated everyone out there who was watching him.
However, Ben and Frances are friends. They said kind words to each other after the match. Ben said he knows this one hurts. He is sorry Frances did win back-to-back titles, but you are the kind of player who ca. He wants to see him do it again this year.
On the other hand, Frances said it was great to be in the final after having a tough start to the year. Getting number four would have been cool. That will come soon enough. Let’s make this even better and have a great 24.
