Pakistan bans vehicles without M-Tag registration on motorways

The National Highway and Motorway Authority of Pakistan (NHMA) bans vehicles without M-Tag registration on motorways from Feb 6, 2024. NHMA has made M-Tag registration mandatory for all vehicles on Motorways.

So, it means all vehicles without M-Tag registration are not allowed on highways and motorways. According to the Motorway Authority of Pakistan, it bans vehicles without M-Tag registration for the convenience of motorists and to maintain free traffic flow via motorway entrance and departure points.

M-Tag refers to a digital toll collection system that allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping on motorways. Hence, all vehicles to go through Pakistan’s extensive motorway network will be required to use the M-Tag.

The Peshawar-Islamabad-Lahore Motorway (M1)

Pindi Bhattian-Multan Motorway (M4)

Hakla-D.I. Khan Motorway (M14)

Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway (M3)

Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M5)

Hassanabdal-Mansehra Expressway (E35)

However, motorists can obtain an M-Tag by visiting the customer care center with their vehicle registration book/card and CNIC. No vehicles without an M-Tag would be allowed to enter motorways after Feb 5, 2024.

How to get an M-Tag for traveling on Motorways

Step 1: Go to a nearby booth near a major toll plaza or service area on motorways.

Step 2: Bring your CNIC and a copy of your vehicle’s registration certificate.

Step 3: Obtain and fill out the application form with all necessary information available at the booth.

Step 4: Submit the filled application form and required documents to the booth attendant for verification.

In light of the new regulation, the National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) and the National Highway Authority (NHA) have issued crucial advice to motorists.

However, drivers or motorists should ensure that their M-Tag registration process has been completed correctly to avoid penalties.

Furthermore, motorists should utilize fog lights when driving through dense fog to improve safety during poor weather conditions.

Authorities also encourage motorists to limit their travel on motorways to just when required, particularly during less visibility due to fog.
