Parasites found in cat poop help treat Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s

A new study shows common parasites found in cat poop may help treat neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Nature Microbiology has published this research study.

It is titled “Engineering Toxoplasma gondii secretion systems for intracellular delivery of multiple large therapeutic proteins to neurons.”

Scientists found that the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, found commonly in cat poop may also help treat neurological disorders. They studied Toxoplasma as it has the potential to treat brain disorders.

Following this, they injected this parasite into mice brains. Parasite Toxoplasma gondii proved effective at introducing proteins into the brains of mice to treat neurological illnesses.

Hence, scientists may inject these therapeutic proteins directly into the human brain to treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disorders.

Even though this research is still in the early stages, it appears to have great potential to overcome significant challenges in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Hence, scientists are studying whether they may modify these parasites for treatment in the human brain. They also focused on the potential of delivering medication across the blood-brain barrier by modified brain parasites.

This research is significant as neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Rett Syndrome have a connection with protein dysfunction in the brain.

Hence, these disorders need the introduction of therapeutic proteins into the human brain. The challenge of getting therapeutic proteins into the right place inside neurons across the blood-brain barrier has limited treatments available for these disorders.

According to scientists, it will take several years for this research implementation. This is because they will continue to experiment to ensure that parasites are made to die after their delivery into the human brain. It is a crucial step that would reduce any potential harm.

International scientists under the direction of the University of Glasgow in cooperation with Tel Aviv University conducted this research. So, parasites Toxoplasma gondii commonly found in cat poop may help treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
