PM Shehbaz Sharif ordered abolition of PWD for corruption & incompetency
Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the abolition of the PWD (Pakistan Works Department) in a significant move. This abolition is part of his zero-tolerance policy for corruption, incompetency, and inefficiency.
PM Shehbaz stated the abolition of Pak PWD is a first step in eliminating internal corruption. It was destroying the system. He attributed PWD to cancer saying it was eating country-like cancer eats body.
Prime Minister also said his decision to abolish Pak PWD comes after its years-long corruption, poor performance, and inability to meet goals. He also tweeted about this matter on Twitter X.
PM Shehbaz wrote he is fully committed to making a more honest, dedicated, and efficient bureaucracy. It will deliver high-quality public service and raise standards of governance. It came after PM Shehbaz Sharif ordered the abolition of Pak PWD in a high-level meeting on June 3, 2024.
He learned about a report on PWD performance during this meeting. A committee under the supervision of Jahanzeb Khan prepared this report. Jahanzeb Khan is deputy chairman of the Planning Commission.
He also suggested the dissolution of some government departments and the consolidation of others. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz also gave committee instructions to finalize any additional recommendations.

However, Pak PWD is one of the oldest government departments. It has 7,000 workers. They are now upset over the decision to abolish them since they don’t know what the future holds for them. Several media channels report that the government will devise a strategy to move them to different departments or fire them.
In a separate significant move, PM Shehbaz also ordered the dismissal of 12 senior officers of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The dismissed FBR officers were involved in corrupt practices.
The fired officers did not properly implement the trace and track system of the tax collection body introduced in 2019. Hence, PM Shehbaz ordered the dismissal of these officers.
