Exercise HoloBike transports riders into virtual reality using holograms

A group, Saga Holographic, has been making an exercise bike named HoloBike, which transports riders into virtual reality using holograms. HoloBike is a holographic training bike that shows realistic 3D trails for indoor riding.

Holographic technology is a technique that creates three-dimensional images by capturing and reconstructing the light field of an object. It allows viewers to see objects from different angles as if they were real.

Saga Holographic is a group of engineers and artists from California. They have been working on this bike for three years. They got the idea for this bike while riding their bikes through the Andes in Colombia.

The engineer Samuel Matson said he could go for three hours in the fascinating rhythm of moving through space while riding outdoors. His goal for Holobike was to make indoor riding feel as exciting as biking outside in beautiful scenery.

He also said riding a stationary bike for 10 minutes feels boring sometimes. It is interesting how time may get longer. By getting into that feeling of flow, they can make the biking experience more peaceful and improve their ability to focus and keep going through HoloBike.

However, the manufacturing team used knowledge from all over the world. Such as Layer Design from the UK and hologram technology from study labs in Silicon Valley, to make the exercise Holobike.

They have made a cycling experience as real as possible without 3D headsets or glasses. The HoloBike has a panoramic light-field display that makes it feel like you are on a real trail sitting indoors.

Holobike also uses an infrared depth sensor, which reacts dynamically to the user’s line of sight. It gives them a realistic sense of space. The team has also been using digital scans of real tracks to build a library of 3D virtual rides in places like the Alps and the Outback.

The team started a funding campaign to take the “HoloBike exercise” project to the next level as soon it may be part of indoor training.
