If the moon disappeared, what would happen to Earth?
Do you ever wonder what would happen to Earth if the moon disappeared and how disastrous it could be? The moon and Earth have been orbiting around the Sun for more than 4.5 billion years.
According to scientists, the moon formed when an asteroid the size of Mars hit Earth, sending pieces of it scattering into space and finally coming together to form what we know today as the moon.
It is hard for humans to conceive what life on Earth would be like if the moon suddenly disappeared because we are so used to it. But the real question is; Is it possible for the moon to disappear or fly away? And what would happen if it did?
Noah Petro is a project scientist for NASA’s Artemis 3 moon mission. According to him, the moon could disappear due to several astronomical events.
Noah stated he believes that a significant impact that fractures the moon would be the only astronomical event that might untie the moon. A big enough object might theoretically split the moon apart, much like the massive impact believed to have caused the moon’s origin.
However, he emphasized that there is extremely little chance of such an event happening because the sun and planets have absorbed a majority of the solar system’s massive objects.
Noah stated that the only other scenario would be a rogue planet that entered the solar system from interstellar space. But there is very little likelihood that it would collide with the moon.

Many of the occurrences that people used to would drastically change if the moon disappeared. The impact on marine life, coastal ecosystems, and ocean tides would be disastrous.
Furthermore, there would be a significant decrease in tidal erosion near coastal boundaries. The planet’s ability to distribute heat and energy would be greatly impacted due to this. It would result in a temperature and environment, almost unrecognizable to humans.
Moreover, Earth’s axis will tilt and become severe and irregular resulting in inconsistent seasons. It may cause rapid shifts in the planet’s habitability without the Moon’s stability.
